Nothing is getting cold
Viking Refrigerator Not Cooling at All
Both sides warm at once, and the question is whether anything is running at all.
Viking Repair Service Los Angeleson site 8am to 8pm, every day of the weekcalls picked up 24/7
| What you see | Likely cause | Safe check | When to call |
|---|---|---|---|
| Both sides warm, and you can hear it running | Heat is not leaving the condenser: blocked grille, matted coil, or a stopped condenser fan | Clear the machine grille and pull the cabinet clear of anything stacked | If it is no colder a day later |
| Both sides warm and the cabinet is silent | No power reaching it, or a control that has locked out | Look for the interior light, then look at the breaker | The same afternoon |
| Warm since a power cut, fine before it | The control did not come back up, or the compressor's starting components took the surge | Off at the breaker, wait a minute, back on | If it does not restart on the second try |
| Warm, running hard, sides hot to the hand | The condenser fan has stopped, so the heat is going into the cabinet instead of out of it | Feel for air moving at that grille | This week, before the compressor strains |
The table above sorts a Viking built-in that has stopped cooling by what the cabinet is still doing. Row one is where most of these calls end up; if nothing is running at all, go to row two and call Viking Repair Service Los Angeles at (213) 799-7879 while the freezer still has a head start.
Running, but getting nowhere
Row one is the common case and the cheap one. A built-in sheds its heat through a condenser behind the machine grille, which on a full-height Viking column is at the top of the cabinet rather than at the floor, and only if air reaches that coil and leaves again. Dust mats it, a box leans on the side, a bearing seizes. The cabinet keeps working perfectly while achieving less: nothing sounds wrong, and the temperature creeps.
Silent, or back from a power cut
Rows two and three are the opposite: the cabinet is not trying. A dark interior points at power, and one careful breaker reset is all an owner should do. After an outage it is usually a control that came back confused, or start components that took the surge. Both are small repairs, and a far smaller bill than people brace for. Row four earns a visit on its own: heat with nowhere to go puts a compressor on borrowed time.
Normal, not normal, and the line between them
-
Normal
Long runs through a hot afternoon, settling again once the kitchen cools.
Not normal
Days on end, never sounding as though it has caught up.
Time to call
Call after a full day with no let-up.
-
Normal
Warm air off the machine grille while it runs. That is the heat leaving.
Not normal
Grille and cabinet sides too hot to keep a hand on.
Time to call
This week. The heat is not getting away.
-
Normal
Food in the door a little softer than food at the back of a shelf.
Not normal
Milk at the back of the top shelf no cooler than the worktop.
Time to call
Today, and move anything you cannot replace.
That is the difference between a cabinet working hard and one that has stopped working. Call Viking Repair Service Los Angeles at (213) 799-7879 and describe the row you are on — that sentence is worth more than a guess at the part.
Safe checks before the visit
-
Open the door and look for the interior light. A cabinet that is dark as well as warm is a power question before it is a refrigeration one, and that changes what you say on the phone.
-
Switch the kitchen breaker off, count to sixty, switch it back on. Once only: if it trips straight back, leave it off and call.
-
Clear anything stacked on or against the cabinet and brush its machine grille. Give it a full day before judging it.
-
Stop there. Nothing further is an owner job on a built-in: the sealed circuit, the wiring behind the grille and anything that needs a panel off belong to the visit. Call Viking Repair Service Los Angeles at (213) 799-7879 and say which of the checks above changed anything.
Asked about this one
- Is a warm Viking built-in always the compressor?
- Rarely. A failed compressor is loud about it and usually takes the freezer down inside a day. Far more often both sides drift warm because heat is not leaving the condenser, or because nothing has told the cabinet to cool at all. Viking Repair Service Los Angeles proves which before quoting.
